Opulent lifestyles will lead to environmental problems
Preeti Singh deserves praise for calling a spade a spade in her article Climate shame (December 11). She is right in stating that the marriage season in Delhi significantly contributes towards the city’s pollution levels. Unfortunately, Delhiites don’t realise that their liking for grand weddings and opulent lifestyles would lead to various environmental problems in the future.

Telangana decision hasty
The report Going TelanGaga! (December 12) shows that the Centre’s nod to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh has set a bad precedent and has put the Congress in a tight spot. The UPA government has committed a big mistake by succumbing to the demand of Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao, an untrustworthy politician and an opportunist. His hunger strike was just a way to improve his sagging political career. The UPA government could have handled the Telangana issue more maturely.

Any demand to carve out new states from the existing ones is unconstitutional and wrong. The government should allow division of bigger states only when there are administrative problems or an uneven distribution of population. Bifurcation of a state creates more problems than it solves. Such divisions lead to internal security problems and unnecessary troubles among various communities. The Union government should not surrender to unethical demands of selfish politicians like K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Learn from the US
American President Barack Obama is right in saying that war is necessary for achieving peace (Obama defends war as he accepts peace prize, December 11). The only way to curb terrorism is to give a befitting reply to the merchants of terror in a language they best understand. The US has managed to avoid any terror strikes post 9/11 because they have taken a zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism.
