Day after the recovery of a large number of skulls and body parts of newborn female babies from nearly 40 polythene bags dumped inside a garbage pit here, raids conducted on Monday found that six out of eight private clinics in the town were being run illegally. The police also found evidence of illegal sex determination tests conducted in these clinics.
All the eight clinics in Nayagarh, located 90 km away from Bhubaneswar, remained shut on Monday as the law enforcement agencies launched the raids. Health Secretary Chinmay Basu, who came here for an on-the-spot assessment said: “It has been found that out of the 8 private clinics and nursing homes as many as six didn’t have proper licences.”
The police and Crime Branch arrested two persons following the raids. Five more were detained for interrogation. The arrested include the proprietor of Krishna Clinic, Sabita Sahu, whose husband Dr Naba Kishore Sahu remains untraceable.
“The garbage pit from which the skulls and body parts of the newborns were seized on Sunday belonged to Krishna Clinic. The Clinic’s management failed to produce any official record about the bodies of newborn babies,” Bhubaneswar Range Deputy Inspector General Y.B. Khurania told the “Hindustan Times”.
Indicating that it was an organised racket, the DIG said more raids would follow in the coming days. “No one would be spared. The government has asked all the 30 district collectors to verify licences of all private nursing homes and clinics,” Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy who visited Nayagarh on Monday, said.
