Armed rebels shot dead Kali Varapa Kanta Rao at his grocery shop in Almonda village in Koraput on Sunday evening, District Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar told IANS.

"The two rebels shot Rao, suspecting him to be a police informer, although he was not one," the official added.

Koraput is around 500 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

"Police personnel have headed to Almonda village," Kumar said.
