Twenty-year-old Pinki Haldar, who had become a mother a year back, went missing on October 5. “On that day, my year-old grandson waved to her when she left for work. Probably he knew that she will not return,” says Vandana, Pinki’s mother.
Pinki was one of the 12 victims allegedly killed by Moninder Singh and Surendra Koli.
Amit, Pinki’s son, is now being brought up by his grandparents.
“His father abandoned my daughter. Now that she has also gone, Amit has no one but us. The government has paid us Rs 5 lakh but the money cannot get my grandson his mother,” she says.
Pinki used to work at a house in sector 30 as a maid. On October 5, she left for work as usual but did not return. The next day her father, Jenu Sarkar, went to file an FIR but was abused by Simranjeet Kaur, the chowki-in charge of Nithari police post.
The Sarkar family is reminded of the horror each day as they are the neighbours of Maya who used to work as a domestic maid at Pandher’s house. “She would have known about my daughter. She had expensive mobile phones and her husband was always carrying a lot of cash,” said Jenu.
Maya’s house remains locked. Her husband, Krishan, has been picked up for questioning. Pinki’s family does not want to talk about them. For them and their neighbours, the woman is an outcast. “Who knows if Maya told Surender about my daughter,” says Jenu Sarkar.
