The BJP would emerge as a major political force in Telangana in the next four years, but its expansion would not affect its alliance with its partners like the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), said party chief Amit Shah on Thursday.
“We are a separate party. The BJP has a right to expand and we will expand in every state. This will have no impact on any alliance,” he said, responding to queries about the party running into trouble with partner TDP due to its expansion plans. TDP is a partner in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre. The BJP is also sharing power with the TDP in Andhra Pradesh.
Shah, who has been focused on expanding the BJP’s reach in southern and eastern states, expressed confidence in assuming a stronghold in the state in the next few years.
“I never think negatively. Our core team has made a strategy today and will make in future as well... In four years, the BJP will become the main political force in Telangana,” Shah told reporters. The BJP chief said his visit to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh was part of the nation-wide tour to have 10 crore new members.
The party has set a target of 35 lakh members in the newly-created state. BJP had been a consistent supporter of the separate statehood demand and had won one Lok Sabha seat and five assembly seats in Telangana in the 2014 elections in alliance with the TDP.
