Out on parole, 186 convicts gone without a trace

These prisoners, convicted of offences such as murder, dacoity and rape, were at the Yerawada (Pune) and Kolhapur jails.

A report by Deputy Inspector General (Prison) Ravindra Kedari has asked the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to place details of all these criminals on its website.

“All police stations linked to the CID will then be informed about these absconding criminals,” said Kedari.

The prison department also sent details and photographs of all these criminals to all police stations in the state.

Parole is the supervised release of a prisoner before the completion of his sentence, while furlough is earned leave.

These are granted to prisoners who have served more than seven years of their sentences and whose behaviour in jail has been satisfactory.

The jail superintendent, who asks the prisoner to come up with two guarantors and a specific collateral, decides on whether to grant the parole or furlough or not.
