More than 20,000 security officials have been deployed in the Bangladeshi capital to prepare for the end of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's five-year term, which expires at midnight, police said on Friday.

Zia will formally hand over power on Saturday to an interim caretaker government.
Police said additional forces will be called to the capital if needed. The changeover is taking place amid threats of street protests by the country's main opposition alliance.
