Spunky actress Preity Zinta flaunts overcoats with panache in Karan Johar’s Kal Ho Naa Ho. And it hasn’t taken long for this trend to percolate down to the Capital.

Says Bollywood designer Manish Malhotra, the man who gave Zinta the new look, “I’ve tried to incorporate the New York look. Black fitted overcoats are the current rage not only in Europe and the US, but in India as well.”

Besides black, the most desirable colour for the season, there are overcoats in red, deep blue and pink that can be well co-ordinated with fitted trousers and striped jeans. “The overcoat is one of the most important pieces of clothing in the wardrobe. Besides tweed and checks, I’ve also done varied lengths of overcoats with zippers and hoods,” says designer Puja Nayyar.

One can also mix and match accessories like scarves and hats with overcoats. “Throwing a bright coloured scarf around your neck lends a totally different look to your attire,” adds Nayyar.

Benetton has overcoats in neutral colours like black, beige and grey. “Overcoats in felt and lamb’s wool (imported from Italy) can be worn over suits, jumpers and evening dresses. The three-quarter length looks stylish with a retro accent,” avers Benetton head of products Manjula Tiwari.
