Owen, who damaged knee ligaments during England's World Cup campaign in Germany, appears to be increasingly optimistic of returning soon following his latest consultations with his surgeon.

The 27-year-old said: "If it remains a steady progression I'm hoping to be back in April.

"But the real test will come when we get nearer the time."
