Krishna has also been placed under suspension.
Addressing newspersons here, Principal secretary (Home) SK Agarwal and director general of police Bua Singh said Azamgarh SSP Navin Arora collected information about bribery at a recruitment centre. A raid was conducted on Monday to unearth the scam, they added.

The DGP said police had also recovered Rs 11.22 lakh from the possession of the arrested persons. The recruitment process at Azamgarh has been cancelled. Now, a new board will be constituted to undertake a fresh exercise. However, the DGP said those who had already applied would be called for a test. Krishna was part of a five-member board headed by DIG, Azamgarh, AB Mishra.

The DGP said State Bank of India (Lucknow) employee Shakeel had been operating as an agent to collect money from candidates.

The DGP said the department had alerted the anti-corruption agency to keep vigil on ten recruitment centres in the State. The Azamgarh SSP acted on a tip-off that some police personnel were taking money, he said.

Referring to the law and order situation, the DGP claimed that there had been an improvement over the past five months. Bua Singh had joined as the DGP in March.

Singh said there were nearly 400 encounters, including those with several dreaded dacoits. The DGP also said police were trying to track down the Dadua gang and there was no slackness on this front.
