Rockets were fired at Border Security Force outposts near Wagah in the early hours of Saturday, with evidence indicating that it was the handiwork of the Pakistan Rangers.
No casualties were reported.
It was a narrow escape for nearly 100 Border Security Force (BSF) troopers as two of the four rockets fired did not explode despite hitting the outpost in Kahngarh, 300 metres from the Wagah-Attari checkpost. The other two rockets missed the targets and exploded in the fields.
The BSF hit back at the Pakistan Rangers outpost with machine guns and mortars.
At an emergency flag meeting later, the BSF gave a protest note to the Pakistan Rangers, who too gave its written objection to firing from the Indian side.
At the meeting, the Pakistan Rangers reportedly described it as a terrorist act. But an inspection of the shells, part of 107 mm Chinese-origin rockets purchased by the Pakistan Army, created suspicion about the Pakistan Rangers’ involvement.
BSF Inspector General Himmat Singh said that the Pakistan Rangers had been told that such attacks would not be tolerated. He said that a search was on for the shells of the two rockets that exploded in the fields.
