The Pakistan Supreme Court would on Thursday decide on the fate of a Hindu girl whose father alleges that she was forcibly converted to Islam and married as a second wife to a Muslim youth.
A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar and Justice Saiyed Saeed Ashhad would decide on the merits of allegations by Misri Ludhani, an Additional Income Tax official from Karachi, that his daughter Neelum was abducted and married to Amjad Shahzad after she was forcibly converted to Islam.
This was Shahzad's second marriage and he had a son from his first wife.
The case came up for hearing in the court on Tuesday amid claims in media that a number of Hindu girls in Sindh were being abducted and married to Muslim youth after their conversion to Islam. The issue also recently figured in Pakistan's National Assembly.
Seeking the court's intervention to rescue his daughter, Ludhani alleged that Neelum had been missing from their house since April 12 and highlighted certain anomalies in the certificate which stated that she has been converted to Islam on her own free will.
He alleged that she was lured into marriage because she was mentally retarded and had no idea what she would face in future, and requested the court that she should be provided complete solitude so that she could reconsider her decision.
