Abiding by a request made by the Pakistan government, India will supply 50,000 tonnes of sugar to Pakistan every two months, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said.

"This request follows a meeting I had with President Pervez Musharraf recently," Pawar said, while addressing a farmers' convention on the occasion of the All-India Agriculture, Cattle and Dairy Expo, which began on Sunday.

Pawar said that Musharraf had informed him about the heavy expenditures involved in importing sugar from Brazil.

"I suggested him an alternative of importing sugar from India. We will just have to send truckloads across the border from Punjab," he said.
