Taking a strong note of the Hindustan Times report ‘Missing kids parents asked to say police doing a fine job’ published on June 13, the National Commission of Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has written to the Director General of the UP Police to take action against the erring police officers named in the news report.
Following the publication of the report, Commodore Lokesh K Batra (Retd.), a Social and RTI activist from Noida, had written to the NCPCR and urged them to take action against the officers involved.
The NCPCR in its letter dated June 20, 2008 mentioned the said HT report and stated the parents of several children were called at Vijay Nagar police station at Ghaziabad and allegedly asked to file statements in police’s favour.
“The NCPCR received a complaint in this regard and expressed a grave concern. Therefore the police authorities are requested to get the matter investigated and necessary action be taken against the concerned officials at the earliest,” the report said.
The NCPCR had earlier taken a strong note of the incidents of missing-children. In its letter dated June 11, the Commission had asked the DGP (UP) to instruct all SSPs in the districts to lodge FIR in case of missing children, referring to the guidelines of the Supreme Court of India and guidelines issued by the Andhra Pradesh government in this regard.
The Commission further stated that a detailed status report of the missing children be sent and the action taken to trace them should be reported to the commission.

{{/usCountry}}Harendra, 12, went missing from Vijay Nagar area on February 8, 2008 and because of his family’s efforts, he was found four months later on June 23, 2008.
His father, Jagratan had lodged FIR at Vijay Nagar police station but there was no response from the police.
“They didn’t even bother to call the other police stations regarding my child. They do not respond to the calls of missing children. The police stations across the district do not have lists of the missing children,” Jagratan alleged.
