For a rather volatile bunch of nations, public panicking comes as no surprise. If the escalating prices, especially for fuel, saw innovative attempts by Indians to stock up for the 'times when prices will be even higher', the panic among investors following the change of government was even more inexplicable. That both proved to be based on rather unfounded reasons was an even greater reason for surprise.

Frights like bird flu also dominated much of the year, as did the fear of 'terror', which led to a number of irrational decisions through the year, by governments and individuals.
