The local MLA, Balbir Pal Shah, said that the ward would one of the key features of the upcoming ultra modern government hospital complex. He said that project report of the hospital building was at the final stages and its construction work would be started soon.

Shah laid the foundation of a modern mortuary at the Bhim Sen Sachar Civil Hospital (BSSCH) here on Saturday.

"The upcoming hospital will have unmatched state-of-the-art facilities. There is a plan to open trauma centre to handle accident cases, burn ward and other specialized wards under one roof," said Shah.

Demand for a burn ward was pending for long. Being the hub of handloom and alike factories, Panipat houses hundreds of industrial units where risk of fire mishaps was high. The town also has some of the other highly inflammable units including an Indian Oil Corporation Refinery, National Fertilisers Limited, thermal power plant and petro chemical plant hub.

In the last few years, some of these units have witnessed fire cases where several workers were charred to death or sustained severe burn injuries.

Enquiries revealed that few years ago the IOCL had contributed grant for a dedicated burn ward at BSSCH but the authorities failed to utilise it accordingly.

A few years ago, two-rooms were built but they didn't meet the required specifications to set up a burn ward.
