Apropos of the editorial How not to wreck one garage to fit a car (October 6), neither Mamata Banerjee nor Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is worried about the socio-economic condition of the people in Singur. The CPI(M)-led government and people should have given the Tatas a chance to go ahead on the Nano project, which could have benefits for the area. Instead, Mamata Banerjee only ignited the people’s fury, merely to regain lost political ground in West Bengal. A selfish and corrupt political system left the people of Singur empty-handed and harassed.

Passing the parcel
With reference to the report Last Govt’s fault, says Haryana CM (October 3), the Chief Minister has never commented on the lines you have published on the law and order situation in Gurgaon and on other issues. The Chief Minister has added that the government has already introduced a Police Commissionerate system and has appointed four IPS officers in Gurgaon. No doubt the CM has admitted that there is a shortage of power in the State because the previous governments did not take interest in increasing generation capacity. But ever since the present government has assumed office, steps have been taken to provide adequate power to the consumers.

HT correspondent replies: Chief Minister Hooda has said the crime figures have swollen, which he attributes to the liberal filing of FIRs as ordered by him, and that his government is doing something to alleviate the power problem, which he blamed on the previous government. Isn't he then admitting to a worsening crime situation and a power problem, for whatever reasons?
Cynicism of the media
This has reference to the report Glory in Africa, Shame in Orissa (October 4). It seems the media have a strange sense of reporting. So while a few stray cases in one district of Orissa become a matter of national shame, serial blasts in cities across India are treated as nothing but acts borne of the frustration of some misguided youths. Nabbing some masterminds by the police is something to be reported with hidden sarcasm. The Jamia Nagar encounter is considered suspect as some youngster proved his innocence by breaking down before the camera. It is unfortunate that our media is not fair.

Shame on the nation
The events in Orissa are a matter of shame for the whole nation. While we regard our armed forces as the nation’s pride, it is sad to see an Army man suffer just because he happens to be a Christian. These violent events are against the peaceful culture of our country. All right-thinking Indians should come forward to condemn these incidents and fight communalism.

apropos of the report Polls are here and it’s raining sops (October 4), the government’s decision to increase the income limit for the earning OBC creamy layer in educational and employment opportunities is only a political gimmick. When so many poor people are slogging away for one square meal a day, extending the benefit in such a manner is like ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’.
