Paul Hamm is no longer the youngster on the US squad. After making his debut at the 2000 Sydney Olympics alongside twin brother Morgan, Hamm has made a name for himself outside the twin set with a World team silver medal, near-miss of the World all-around title and a 2002 US national crown.

He is arguably the best male gymnast produced by the US since Kurt Thomas. He was the first American to win the all round title at the World Championship in 2003. For his accomplishments he was nominated for the James E Sullivan Award for excellence in amateur athletics.

At the 2003 Nationals, Hamm won his second consecutive all-around and pommel horse titles and also won on high bar. His first US all-around title in 2002 ended Blaine Wilson's attempt to become a six-time national champion. In 2002, he also claimed the national titles in vault.
