"It is a great win for the boys and the credit should go to them. I congratulate them for this historic win," the agriculture minister told reporters here after India won by 123 runs in Johannesburg.

It was India's first ever Test win on South African soil in 10 matches.

Pawar reminded everyone - from his fellow members of parliament and the media - that it was wrong the way they reacted when India lost the one day international series 0-4 before the three-Test series started.

"The media was impatient and even members of parliament as well. I think it would have been better if we were patient and had faith in our boys. In everyone's career comes a phase like that," he said.

Members of parliament had reacted angrily when the media approached for their reaction after the initial defeats in the one-day series, while the family of Mohammed Kaif had to bear the brunt of the fans' ire in Allahabad.

India bundled out South Africa, chasing 402 runs to win and overnight 163 for five, for 278 in their second innings before lunch to etch a remarkable triumph.

India had scored 249 and 236 while the home side made 84 in their first innings.

In all, the two countries have played 17 Tests, with India winning four and South Africa seven while six have resulted in draws.

After a 0-4 drubbing in the one-day series, chairman of selectors Dillip Vengsarkar was sent to South Africa for the Test series as a knee jerk reaction.

Former captain Kapil Dev also congratulated the team, saying that the mix of youth and experience has paid off.

"The players have shown great character to win the Test match after a bad loss in the one day series," Kapil told a television channel.

"I would like to congratulate captain Rahul Dravid for the win. They should not become complacent in the next two matches," was his advice to the team.
