Economic recovery coupled with improving income levels helped hold PC (personal computer) sales during April-September 2009. PC sales rose marginally by 1 per cent compared to similar period of last financial year according to the data released by MAIT (Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology), the industry body for IT hardware.
Computer sales that include desktops, notebooks and netbooks, stood at 37.1 lakh units during April-September 2009 compared to around 36.9 lakh PCs sold during same period of last fiscal.
During the first half of current fiscal sale of notebooks recorded a robust 43 per cent increase but desktop sales recorded 11 per cent decline as compared to last year.
“With strong bounce back of the economy we expect second half of this financial year to witness a further increase in computer sales,” said Vinnie Mehta, executive director, MAIT.
He said sectors such as BPO and IT enabled services, retail and government that account for a major chunk of the IT hardware market were quite conservative in their IT spends.
