THE UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) today appealed to the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) to waive off Rs 15 lakh penalty proposed to be slapped on it for overdrawing electricity from the grid.
It made the appeal in its reply filed to the CERC filed today. The CERC last month had asked the UPPCL to explain by June 23 why Rs 15 lakh penalty should not be imposed on it for ignoring Northern Regional Load Dispatch Centre’s repeated warning not to draw power from the grid beyond its quota when the grid frequency was below the threshold limit.
The UPPCL officials, pleading the case before the Commission, pointed out that UP was not the only State to overdraw power and many other States too were overdrawing due to their requirement of more electricity. However, the penalty was imposed on UP alone, they added. They said that now they were trying their level best to maintain the grid discipline by avoiding resorting to overdraw and requested that the proposed penalty be waived off, said a senior UPPCL officer here today.
The Commission will now vet the UPPCL ‘s reply and take a decision accordingly.
Meanwhile, the State continued to reel under acute power crisis on Monday as well due to the demand-supply gap. Against a demand for around 7500 mw the total availability of power stood at mere 5000 mw. The UPPCL imposed heavy power cuts throughout the State to tide over the situation.

NRLDC accused of double standards
ACCUSING THE Northern Grid Load Dispatch Centre (NRLDC) of being unfair to UP in complaining against it for overdrawing electricity from the grid, the UP Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad today demanded it to issue notices to other States which were also resorting to overdraw. In a letter to NRLDC ED SK Soni, Parishad president Avadhesh Kumar Verma said Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi had overdrawn power at different times and dates in June when the frequency was below the threshold limit of 49 hertz. But the NRLDC ignored their act where as it filed a complaint against UP to the CERC which even imposed penalty on UP/UPPCL last month.
