CThe PDF leaders are also extremely unhappy with chairman and Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawad over his meetings with Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. There is a feeling in the party that it has put a spoke in their plan against the State Government.
In fact, while Jawad has been trying to tread the middle path by maintaining relations with Yadav, other PDF leaders, who have links with Jan Morcha Alliance (JMA) of former Prime Minister VP Singh have adopted a hostile attitude against the chief minister. JMA leaders were quite disappointed over Jawad’s recent meetings with the chief minister. The JMA was under the impression that the two Muslim fronts — PDF and UP United Democratic Front — would help in weaning away the Muslim community from the SP.
The PDF leaders, who claim proximity to Kalbe Jawad, have been making desperate attempts to wean him away from the chief minister. After Jawad’s “SP-a-party-of-criminals” statement, the PDF leaders have veered round to the view that Shia cleric’s access to the corridor of power would be snapped. “We have succeeded in our plan”, commented a PDF office-bearer on Sunday. While the PDF has been struggling for survival, its chairman has become victim of conspiracies of his own supporters in the party. The invitation to JMA convenor Raj Babbar to attend PDF’s anti-Israel dharna last week was presumably a part of this game plan.
While the rootless PDF leaders have been hobnobbing with anti-Yadav forces for their rehabilitation, Jawad’s presence has become imperative for the success of the plan. He is the only recognisable face in the party. But inexplicably he has limited agenda. For long he had been at loggerheads with the Congress-led UPA government and the Bahujan Samaj Party, which had brought him closer to Yadav.
