Ambika Prasad Dubey, 40, was shot in the chest and stomach at point-blank range after Dubey and some locals stopped a vehicle carrying PDS grain in Jhilpani village, 60 km from district headquarter Narsingpur, late Saturday.

Villagers said they wanted district officials to come and see for themselves that they were being denied their full quota of PDS grain.

A team of police personnel led by town inspector Ashutosh Chand reached the spot to get the vehicle released.

After a heated exchange, the policemen allegedly shot Dubey and fled.

“My father was shot at point-blank range,” said daughter Aarti.

Narsingpur SP GG Pandey said two complaints have been lodged and a magisterial inquiry ordered into the incident.

Jabalpur IG V Madhu Kumar said Chand and eight other policemen have been attached to the police line but no case has been registered.
