Peace zone around AU V-C?s office

ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY (AU) administration has banned demonstrations, slogan shouting and other forms of protests in the immediate vicinity of the AU vice-chancellor?s office with immediate effect. Varsity officials have declared the area as peace zone and on Wednesday put up boards around the V-C office informing the students of the development. They warned that any disturbance in the zone would be treated as a penal offence.

Varsity officials have declared the area as peace zone and on Wednesday put up boards around the V-C office informing the students of the development. They warned that any disturbance in the zone would be treated as a penal offence.

To recall, AU vice-chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe quite often had publicly expressed unhappiness over frequent disturbances being caused to him and his office staff due to routine student protests and demonstrations around his office.

The V-C’s office and the North Hall, venue of a number of vital meetings almost daily, often witnesses agitating students barging in and creating ruckus.

Just about a few weeks back, a meeting of top officials regarding construction of new varsity buildings too was disrupted by the agitating students who reportedly misbehaved with some of the AU guests.

Sources said this incident actually prompted the varsity officials to finally ban demonstrations and protests around the V-C office.

Though the AU move has been welcomed by most students, teachers and non-teaching staff, student leaders are expected to oppose the initiative tooth and nail.
