"The people were convinced by the performance of my government. We brought development to Assam. The GDP grew to double that in other states. That is why the people voted for us," Gogoi said.

"The people saw that performance by a government can bring development to the state. So the mandate we got was a positive one for continuity, development and sincerity," he asserted.

Asked if the deputy Chief Minister's post would be given to the Congress's alliance partner Bodoland People's Progressive Front, Gogoi said, "We will have to meet first and work out the modalities. Find out what they want, their aspirations and hopes."

Happy with his party's win in 53 seats as against the 72 seats in the outgoing assembly, he said, "I am excited about our party returning to power despite predictions to the contrary."

Digvijay Singh, in charge of Congress affairs in Assam, who arrived in Guwahati on Thursday evening, said, "The party's victory was due to the work done by the Congress government and progress on all fronts."
