'Perceived differences' are dividing people: Prez

Seeking to bring peace in the world, President Pratibha Patil called for the need to negate and defeat the divisive forces which according to her use people's "perceived differences" as an instrument to execute violence and terrorism.

Seeking to bring peace in the world, President Pratibha Patil on Sunday called for the need to negate and defeat the divisive forces which according to her use people's "perceived differences" as an instrument to execute violence and terrorism.

"Today, it is the perceived differences that are dividing people. A whole ideology of hatred, executed with instruments of violence and terrorism is being spread. They have to be negated and defeated to bring peace in the world," Patil said while inaugurating the Global Vipassana Pagoda in suburban Gorai.

"People create distinctions in their own mind and believe them to be true," she said.

Underlining the importance of the Pagoda, 280-feet in diameter and 325-feet tall, which will provide space for meditation to over 8000 people, Patil said Vipassana could bring, to an individual's life, a quieter perspective through control over the mind and purity of heart.

"In a world full of strife, stress and strain, the need for calming the agitated mind is extremely important,she said.
