238 institutes under UP Technical University
FOR THE first time, a performance-based ranking system for the 238 institutes under UP Technical University (UPTU) has been devised.
The ranking, already placed on the varsity’s website, is aimed at publicly reminding the ‘non-performers’ to brace up. The ranking is based on two parameters — first year failure percentage and final year performance of students in different colleges as well as the performance of students in several key subjects.
This ranking, UPTU officials said would also help candidates judge the performance of each institute for themselves while taking admission.
While no punishment has so far been prescribed for those performing below par, the varsity has decided to give various incentives, like complete autonomy etc to those institutes who perform brilliantly all through.
“This policy we hope would inspire the non-performers to raise the bar,” said Prof Prem Vrat, the new V-C of UPTU and the brain behind the introduction of the ranking system.
The rankings would be reviewed every six months. The statistical analysis of results for 2006 has been completed. Based on the analysis, the performance of Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Agra, College of Engineering and Rural Technology, Meerut, Bhagwant Institute of Technology, Bijnore, Muzaffarnagar Engineering College, Muzaffarnagar, Sagar Institute of Technology and Management, Barabanki and College of Science and Engineering, Jhansi has been rated in the ‘danger zone’ (as far the first year failure percentage of students in B Tech is concerned).
There are 35 colleges in the ‘upper warning limit’ in this category while the performance of the rest of the colleges has been described to be either in sync with the ‘university mean’ or brilliant. Similar procedure has been adopted for other streams like B Pharm, B Arch, MBA, MCA, BHMCT in different colleges.

{{/usCountry}}Oscillating between the ‘control limit’ and the ‘upper warning limit’ on the basis of students’ failure percentage in B Pharm I year are four colleges — RLT Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Etawah, IIMT College of Medical Sciences, Meerut, NKBR College of Pharmacy and Research, Meerut and HIMT College of Pharmacy, Greater Noida. Significantly, the performance of first year students pursuing B Arch course in different colleges is brilliant across all colleges. Thus, no college is either in the ‘danger zone’ or the ‘upper warning limit.’
In bachelor of hotel management course again the performance of colleges too has been very good with just one college in the upper control limit. The scene in those colleges offering MBA, MCA courses is no different with most colleges doing ‘very well’ as far as first year performance of students is concerned.
In B Tech final year, of the total 15,022 students in 69 colleges across the state, the failure percentage is 0.13 per cent with 10.23 per cent students passing with ‘carry over papers’, another 4.05 per cent passing in second division, about 80.18 per cent passing in first division and the rest 5.41 per cent passing in first division with honours. In B Pharm final year, of the total 665 students in 16 institutions, the failure rate is 1.2 per cent with 75.49 per cent student passing with first division.
In B Arch final year, 76.92% students have passed with first division. There are no failures. Similar is the case with students in different colleges in BHMCT final year. In MBA and MCA final year too the varsity has nothing to worry about with most colleges performing well. The UPTU has drawn up a subject wise performance rating.
