With the Indo-US nuclear deal getting an endorsement from Nuclear Suppliers’ Group (NSG), the next natural step could be opening the doors of the United Nations Security Council to India. That’s what former US Ambassador to India Frank Wisner feels.
“There is now a need for a determined effort to make India a permanent member of the Security Council, the G8, APEC and the OECD,” said Wisner.
Wisner was speaking at a seminar organised by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on Indo-US relations post-US elections.
“US and India have turned a page where the past is not the mirror of the future. We are now beginning a new chapter in our relationship,” said the former Ambassador, who is now the vice-chairman of the American International Group.
Wisner also accepted that the relationship between the two countries over the past 50 years was tumultuous.
“The nuclear tests conducted by India ironically proved to be the unshackling of relationship between the two countries. The two countries have come together as a result of the tests,” Wisner said.
Talking on the bilateral nature of the relationship, Wisner pointed out that while the US is now looking at medium term prospects in trade and defence, India has also realised that America is a key market for goods, services and its immigrant community.
