Doherty, 27, who has had a string of arrests for drug possession, appeared before District Judge Jane McIvor to review his court-ordered treatment program.

Known to rock fans as the lead singer of Babyshambles, Doherty is better known to the wider world as the on-off boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss.

The judge was notably more downbeat than last month, when she said she was impressed by Doherty's efforts to conquer addiction. She said his weekly appointments had not been "as successful as expected," but said "it's optimistic-ish."

"Are you optimistic you are going to keep going with this?" she asked Doherty.

"Yes," he replied.

His lawyer, Bruce Clark, told the judge that progress was a mixed bag.

"On the whole progress is being made," Clark said. "He's giving up a lifestyle he's been living in the East End, which is not the best place for him to be."
