Though there has not been an official announcement yet, the issue of hiking the fees could come up for discussion at the governors meeting scheduled in April.

Fee structures have remained unchanged for many years and those concerned with the prestigious business schools say that a fee hike is likely to happen and would not have any adverse affect in the flow and quality of students.

"The IIMs charge just over Rs 3 lakh from each student per year in the Post Graduate Programme, but in turn spend much more than that — Rs 7 lakh.

The deficit amount is a kind of a subsidy. So a fee hike is very much possible," the sources said.

The IIM-A itself has 250 PGP students every year.

Meanwhile, IIM-Lucknow is planning to increase the number of seats for students from next year.

"We plan to increase the student intake from 300 to 325 next year," chairman of the board of governors Harishankar Singhania said at the convocation ceremony of the institute Saturday evening.

He said the institute's Noida campus was inaugurated this year with a capacity to take 60 students.

In the next couple of years both the campuses may take up to 700 students, he added.
