DENGUE, ON Monday, struck the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science (SGPGIMS). Senior resident doctor Dr Sunil Verma tested positive in the dengue serology test and was admitted to the Haemotology ward of the institute.
Dr Verma has been running high fever with rashes all over the body for the last two days. His colleagues suspected dengue and decided to test. On confirmation, Dr Verma was admitted.
Resident doctors at SGPGIMS had been complaining to the SGPGIMS administration about the poor and unhygienic living conditions at the resident doctors’ accommodations for the past several days.
Incidentally on Monday, much before the doctors was diagnosed with dengue, the association had a meeting with acting director Dr RK Sharma, and then subsequent meetings with civil engineer PK Gupta and some other engineers about water, electricity and sanitation conditions at their residences on the SGPGIMS campus. The meetings were held in the morning.
After their colleague tested positive, members of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) decided to call a meeting to raise the issue.
“There are poor conditions in and around our accommodations. There is severe mosquito menace due to water logging. While some of us don’t get water at all in our residence, our colleagues are flooded with water leaking out of broken or leaking pipes. The situation should be taken seriously as dengue virus has hit the campus. We suspect very soon more people on the campus will catch the infection,” said president of the association Dr Amit Goel.
