THE CARDIO VASCULAR Thoracic Surgery Department at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences has added another feather in its cap.
Doctors here successfully removed a tumor weighing 4.5 kg from near the heart of a 14-year-old girl.
The tumor was the ‘biggest’ operated in the world so far. Normally, even big tumours are of the size of an egg.
Sadhana had breathing problems for the last two years. She had turned anaemic. Despite being treated by doctors at Satna in Madhya Pradesh, she got no relief.
The fact that a tumor had developed near her heart was not diagnosed by doctors, till she came to the PGI on March 7.
Dr Nirmal Gupta got an X Ray and a Computed Tomography scan done. This revealed that there was a tumor in her body.
The tumor around the heart was compressing the lungs and her haemoglobin level had come down to 5. This made the doctors decide on an immediate surgery on March 8.
Dr Gupta performed a six-hour surgery with his team and removed the tumour.
The patient is recuperating in the SGPGIMS.
