GOOD NEWS is that surgery operations resumed at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) after five days on Monday.

But the loose ends persist in the form of live wires strewn all over, posing threat to patients, attendants and employees of the hospital. Power situation is far from normal at the institute, as power has been supplied for only lights and fans in most parts of the hospital.
Complete normalcy, however, has been restored at the Operation Theatre Wing, Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Critical Care Medicine (CCM) in order to facilitate surgery. On an average, about 30 major operations take place at the institute and surgeons may have to work overtime for at least one-and-a-half week to clear the backlog.
“We have been able to normalise power supply and air conditioning in the operation theatre. Air-conditioning, however, is yet to be restored in the Neurosurgery and Endoscopy wings, which are non-functional due to no AC.
Power has been restored to ward areas as well as the Out Patient Department (OPD) so that lights and fan could work here, but air-conditioning restoration would still take some time. Same is the case with Emergency wing,” said Dr AK Bhatt, medical superintendent of SGPGIMS sitting in lightless and airless office.
“Hospital Administration wing as it is a non-technical and non-medical wing, will get restoration in the last,” he said.
Meanwhile, the OPD was crowded with patients on Monday, though air-conditioning was yet to be restored. High-tension wire was dragged to the OPD to provide the facility of lights and fans. Sultry weather and absence of air-conditioning compounded the problems of the patients and their kin. While there was a huge crowd at OPD, same was the case at the Registration wing.
