The danger posed by cyclone Phailin is not entirely gone as the storm has changed its course while crossing Jharkhand and is now moving in a northeasterly direction, putting at risk north Bihar districts.
“There could be heavy to very heavy rainfall in north and northeast Bihar due to this,” said BN Chaudhary, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Patna.
The districts of Purnia, Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura, Darbhanga, Samastipur and Sitamarhi could be affected.
The entire state is already on high alert after being lashed by heavy rain and wind blowing at around 50 km per hour since Sunday morning. Most of the places have witnessed rain between 8 cm and 22 cm.
Electricity supply in 38 districts has been cut off because of the danger of wires being blown away. Stating that the next 48 hours will be crucial for Bihar, chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday asked the people to be patient.
“The next 48 hours will be very important. We are taking all possible relief measures. Our water resources department is maintaining a vigil in the catchment areas of the rivers originating in Nepal,” Kumar said.
The chief minister held an emergency video conferencing with all the district magistrates and instructed them to revisit the standard operating procedures put in place for floods. They were asked to keep ready medical, municipal and electricity supply teams. A meeting of the crisis management group headed by the chief secretary was held.
