The public of the Jammu region craving for water since the last three days will breathe a sigh of relief as the deadlock between the striking public health engineering (PHE) daily wage workers and authorities ended on Wednesday.
The ice was broken after a fresh round of talks between the striking employees and commissioner PHE Pawan Kotwal and chief engineer PHE Jammu Sushil Aima on Wednesday afternoon.
The 'tool down' strike of almost 72 hours was deferred by the agitating employees for seven days after the written assurance by the authorities that the demands of regularisation of daily wagers working in the department and payment of their pending dues will be addressed in the next cabinet meeting.
In an hour-long meeting between the PHE workers welfare association and senior officers of the department, it was conveyed that their demands are under the active consideration of the authorities.
Meanwhile, president of the association Subash Verma has said, "After the written assurances from the authorities and in the wake of public hardship, we have decided to defer our strike by seven days."
Speaking on the restoration of water supply, Verma said, "In half of the region, water supply will be restored by Wednesday night and in the remaining areas it will be resorted by Thursday morning."
The employees had gone on 'tool down' strike on Sunday.
