One must appreciate the facts mentioned by Vir Sanghvi (Hello operator, January 12) about phone taps in this country. It is the political class which harbours double standards over public surveillance and like any other issue, it has turned it into a blame game.

If a phone-tap supports the cause of politicians, it is wonderful; if it’s against them, it is a conspiracy. The same tactic is being played out by Amar Singh and Co. all of whom have rushed in to paint it in a more than sinister colour. What has been tapped — the contents of the tape — has become a secondary matter.

Vir Sanghvi’s article made fine reading. Amar Singh’s phone-tap tamasha has made the Samajwadi Party a laughing stock.

India shamed

The editorial Missing girls (January 11) says that 10 million female foetuses have been aborted in India in 20 years. This is a shocking statistic. The preference for having a male child among parents is obviously not an anachronism in this country.

Give them a chance

It was not right to quash the quota policy for Muslims in Aligarh Muslim University. When the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other backward classes still enjoy the benefits of reservation in education, jobs and other fields, Muslims at AMU should be given an opportunity when it is a matter of education.

DDisappointing

Apropos of the editorial Dourdarshan (January 12), Doordarshan has disappointed cricket fans all over the country by deciding not to telecast the Indo-Pak cricket series live. If DD had entered into a proper agreement with Ten Sports, sports fans would not have been deprived of this event.

Correction

In Renuka Narayanan’s Karachi blues (January 13), ‘Wiscomp’ should have read ‘Wipsa’. The error is regretted.
