GK Pillai, who has been named as the next Home Secretary, will join the Ministry as Officer on Special Duty on Thursday before taking over charge from incumbent Madhukar Gupta who retires on June 30.

During the period as OSD, Pillai, a 1972-batch Kerala-cadre IAS officer, will familiarise himself with the affairs handled by the ministry and other policy matters, official sources said.
The name of 59-year-old Pillai, who is currently serving as Commerce Secretary, was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Pillai, who had earlier served in the Home Ministry as a joint secretary, will have a tenure of two years.
