Singur is on the boil again. While Tata Motors MD Ravi Kant and top officers of the state government were on a visit to assess developments at the site on Friday, the small car plant came under attack from villagers, leading to pitched battles between them and the police. Following this, the Trinamool Congress blocked roads at several points, leading to more scuffles.
Kant reached Singur at 9.45 am, accompanied by Cyrus Mistry, chairman of Shapoorji-Pallonji Limited, the company entrusted with the civic construction work. As news of Kant’s arrival spread, 100-odd farmers broke a police cordon and entered the plant through a gap in the boundary wall. When the cops charged at thyem with teargas, they retaliated by pelting stones. Four villagers and two policemen were injured in the scuffle.
Kant and the other officials left the plant at 4.15 p.m. and were escorted to Kolkata through a road that wasn’t blocked.
