The Standing Committee had proposed that the civic body build seven underground parking lots and hand it over to a consortium to maintain and operate the same for 30 years. Though the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will spend Rs 440 crore of taxpayers’ money for constructing the lots, it will not get revenue.

The parking lots with 1,400-vehicle parking capacity will be constructed between Crawford Market and Regal cinema in south Mumbai.

The plan was to hand over the parking lots to a consortium of Venue Infrastructure that also included Wohr Parking System Pvt Ltd (India), a company whose managing director is Girish Vyas, the son-in-law of senior Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi. The Sena is the ruling party in the BMC.

In the Standing Committee’s meeting on Tuesday, the Congress said the civic body let the Opposition screen the project.

“We’ll decide after going through the presentation,” said Congress Corporator Sameer Desai. Congress Corporator Vinod Shekhar, who represents the Regal cinema area, sought an inquiry in the issue.

“We have not took decision, yet about the project,” said Ravindra Waikar, Shiv Sena corporator and chairman of the Standing Committee.
