PANICKED BY the LMC move to demolish unsafe Love Lane buildings, the traders have shot off a letter to the corporation chief to put off the move and help them get the buildings repaired under an expert eye instead.
It may be recalled that the LMC had not only declared many Lane buildings unsafe, but also served notices on the owners to move out to safer areas to help corporation demolish them.
In the letter, the Hazratganj Traders’ Association has written requesting the municipal commissioner not to order demolition of the Love Lane market. Instead the LMC must ensure the safety of residents by removing heavy rooftop hoardings and protect heritage buildings from further damage.
President of Hazratganj Traders’ Association Kishan Chand Bhambhwani admitted having written a letter to the municipal commissioner in this regard.
“We called on the municipal commissioner on Monday in presence of the divisional commissioner. Our demands are simple. We want big rooftop hoardings removed from old Ganj buildings, which are causing an irreparable damage to heritage buildings. We want the permission to repair the buildings in the presence of experts so that the buildings could be saved from natural depreciation,” said Kishan Chand Bhambhwani and added, “Instead of vacating the building and demolishing it, we have proposed their watchful repair by experts from the LMC or the Archaeological Survey of India. The shopkeepers are ready to bear the cost.”

{{/usCountry}}Municipal commissioner VP Singh says, “Most of Ganj traders have done construction without seeking permission of the LMC or the LDA.” He said the tragic incident in which a youth lost his life occurred due to construction of basement by the trader. “Had we carried out the survey, 90 per cent of the shops would be demolished,” the LMC chief added. First, he said, Ganj traders should stop these bad practices among themselves.
