Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attached high importance to several areas including supply of food and water and ensuring basic hygiene and sanitation in relief operations in the flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir.

Chairing a high-level emergency meeting to review relief operations this evening, Modi asked officials to give immediate attention to provide basic necessities like food and water to affected people.

“He directed the home ministry to immediately depute senior officers from Delhi and other states to coordinate the relief operations with local administration in Srinagar,” an official release said.

While the PM was briefed on the progress of rescue operations, especially in Srinagar town and the Kashmir valley, he emphasized the need for a massive effort to ensure basic hygiene and sanitation in the water-logged areas of Srinagar.

76,000 people have been rescued so far in Srinagar area by different security forces.

As the Centre geared up to provide “full support” to the state administration, the PM asked the home ministry to immediately depute senior officers from Delhi and other states to coordinate the relief operations with J-K administration.

“The PM said that in view of the huge magnitude of the calamity, the central government needs to provide full support to the state administration, to comprehensively ramp-up the rescue and relief operations,” the release said.
