Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will pay obeisance at the Golden Temple and the Durgiana Temple in the city on Sunday.
Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur arrived in Amritsar on Saturday on a personal visit.
They are scheduled to offer prayers at the Golden Temple and the Durgiana Temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, on the New Year.
Top police and district officers reviewed security arrangements for the PM's visit at a meeting in Amritsar.
