PM Modi inaugurates Hydel project

Later in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 240MW Uri-II hydroelectric project at Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, 18 km from LoC.

Addressing a gathering on the occasion, the PM said the government has laid stress on environment-friendly energy of which hydro power is an important constituent. He said the state has a potential of production of 13,000-14,000 MW clean and environment-friendly energy for which he said all the efforts would be channelised.

The Prime minister also announced upgradation of a local Kendriya Vidyalaya from high school to higher secondary school for which admissions would be started from the coming session.

Governor NN Vohra, chief minister Omar Abdullah and union minister of state for power Piyush Goyal were present on the occasion.

The Uri-II is the second project on Jhelum river, in Uri town, located downstream of the 480MW Uri-I, which is already in operation. The project will contribute 240MW of electricity to the northern grid.
