Prime Minister Manmohan Singh returned to Delhi on Saturday evening after completing his two-day tour to drought-hit Vidarbha region, which witnessed a spate of suicides by debt-ridden farmers.
The Prime Minister, who arrived on Friday, had visited farmers and widows of those who had committed suicide in the past at Dhamnagon and Waifad in Amravati and Wardha districts respectively and at Yavatmal. He had also visited Mahatma Gandhi's Sewagram Ashram in Wardha district.
Flanked by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh at a press conference on Saturday, Singh announced a package of Rs 3,750 crore for Vidarbha farmers.
In his tour, Prime Minister was accompanied by Pawar, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Minister of State in PMO, Prithiraj Chavan, Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and AICC General Secretary Margaret Alva, who is also the in-charge of party affairs in Maharashtra.
