Casting a glimmer of hope in their darkened lives, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday promised the family of Sarabjit Singh condemned to death in Pakistan that he will again take up the matter with President Pervez Musharraf.

He gave the assurance to Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur who approached him saying "I am a daughter of Punjab, please save my brother. He is also the father of helpless daughters".

Kaur and Sarabjit's daughters Swapandeep and Poonam met Singh at Circuit House in the morning and tears rolled down their cheeks as they pleaded with him to save the condemned man from the gallows.

The Prime Minister told them that he had personally spoken to Musharraf twice in the past about Sarabjit's case and now would again talk to him.

He had also agreed to write an official letter to the Pakistan government on the issue, Kaur said.

Pakistan's Supreme Court on March 9 rejected Sarabjit's review petition and upheld the death sentence awarded to him for allegedly spying and carrying out four bomb blasts in that country.
