Taking a serious note of the rising accidents on NH-8, the Gurgaon police have asked National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to build foot overbridges (FOBs), flyovers and lay-bys for trucks and buses on the stretch.
In a letter to the NHAI chairman, the police have said that lack of these facilities on the busy highway have resulted in a number of accidents. According to official figures, about 1,400 mishaps took place in the past five years on NH-8.
“In an effort to prevent accidents, we have selected several areas such as Manesar bus stand, Iffco Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, IMT Manesar Chowk, and Sidharawali bus stand where FOBs, flyovers and lay-bys are needed the most. We have informed the NHAI about the need of these facilities at various intersections on NH-8,” said SS Deswal, Gurgaon police commissioner. “At least hundreds of lives could have been saved if these facilities were built over the years. In most of the cases pedestrians are the victims,” said Deswal.
“Besides, the city lacks proper crossings and related infrastructure, resulting in fatal accidents. But the main problem lies with the concerned authorities. We are in constant talks with the authorities to make the life of pedestrians safer and easier,” he added.

The police have given specific figures in the letter. A total of 297 accidents were reported due to lack of FOBs. As many as 540 accidents were reported due to lack of lay-bys for buses in various parts of the city.
