Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Anant Kumar Singh said the Shahjahanabad police had received a tip-off that Sanjay Singh, a native of Bihar, was part of a drug network that was involved in narcotics trafficking.

A raid at his place led to the recovery of 1.5 kg cannabis and the arrest of Sanjay and his accomplice Murtaza. During interrogation Sanjay told police that he had handed over part of the drug consignment to Shakil, a resident of Ashoka Colony.

Shakil was looking for buyers and police sent a decoy and the deal was struck. Subsequently, the police arrested Shakil, his accomplices Sajid, Sohrab and Fazal. Over 1.5 kg cannabis was seized. The police recovered Rs 7,000 cash.

The main accused hails from Muzaffarpur (Bihar). Shakil lives in Shahjahanabad while the rest of the accused live in Housing Board Colony at Nishatpura. Sanjay Singh, a history-sheeter, was arrested in Motihari jail (Bihar) where he met Shakil, a resident of Bhopal, who had been arrested for counterfeit currency circulation.

The Shahjahanabad police have booked the accused under the relevant sections of Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). The chain of the drug dealers is also being investigated.
