A local court in Ahmedabad on Staurday rejected the police demand for seven day remand of arrested IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt and sent him to judicial custody.
Bhatt was was arrested on Friday.
Bhatt was produced before a magistrate, seeking seven-day police custody on the ground that he was not cooperating with the police regarding the case.
Bhatt is likely to move the court for bail on Monday.
Bhatt's lawyer argued that the arrest was politically motivated and the FIR lodged against him has been challenged in the apex court.
"The Supreme Court is seized with the matter as the FIR has been challenged. But the Gujarat police arrested Bhatt on the day of Deepawali vacation in the apex court," he contended, opposing the remand plea put by the police.
Earlier, during the day, police conducted search operation at Bhatt and his relatives' residence and seized a laptop and some documents.
Meanwhile, Gujarat government tightened the noose around Bhatt. Ahmedabad police added one more section, 194 of IPC, in the FIR against him for creating false evidence with a view to falsely implicating a person in a case, wherein punishment is death.
The new section makes the charges against the whistleblower cop more serious and would mean that he is likely to encounter greater hindrance in getting bail from the court.
