Sinha said that he had demanded a CBI probe as after visiting the temple he had found that the local police were clueless about the theft.

He said that theft alone did not appear to be the motive as other valuables and cash were left untouched by thieves.

The two eyes of the goddess made of diamonds, a 35 kg silver umbrella and gold jewellery were stolen from the stone idol, which was damaged by the thieves.

DIG, North Chotanagpurm M S Bhatia said that though a dozen persons had been arrested the police were yet to get a clue to the theft.
