At least eight persons including four women were injured as police fired tear gas shells and used batons to disperse protesters led by separatist Dukhtaran-e-Millat after they defied prohibitory orders and clashed with security personnel in Srinagar on Sunday.
The demonstrators led by chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Millat (daughters of the nation) Syeda Asiya Indrabi tried to enter Eidgah in interior city to protest against the death of two women under mysterious circumstances in Shopian, 52 kms from here, on May 30, officials sources said.
Authorities had clamped prohibitory orders near Safakadal since this morning to thwart the planned march as protests and strike by separatists against the Shopian incident continued for the seventh day on Sunday.
All the roads leading to Eidgah were sealed and the residents of adjoining areas complained that they were not allowed to move out of their houses by police and paramilitary personnel.
Police said law enforcing agencies have been directed to strictly enforce prohibitory orders as a precautionary measure.
